Cough Assist Program

Muscular Dystrophy WA provides potentially life changing CoughAssist™ Machines to the Western Australian muscular dystrophy community.

Many people with muscular dystrophy are unable to cough, and accumulated secretions, even from a mild cold, make them prone to complications such as pneumonia and bronchitis. This can lead to an increase in emergency visits and being admitted to hospital. The CoughAssist™ machine assists by inducing both a slow inhale and a rapid exhale; this encourages natural coughing, whilst avoiding problems associated with more invasive procedures.

Since CoughAssist™ machines have been in people’s homes, Muscular Dystrophy WA has identified a significant reduction in the incidence of hospital and ICU admissions, Emergency Department presentations, chest infections and visits to doctors.

Since 2007, Muscular Dystrophy WA has purchased 62 of these machines and has distributed them across the Western Australia – including rural areas from Albany to Geraldton, Karratha and Derby.

A significant portion of these machines has been generously funded by the Channel 7 Telethon Trust.  In 2015, we were again a successful beneficiary of Telethon and were able to purchase 9 brand new machines for our community.  The remainder of funding for the purchase of these machines has been made available through the Department of Health, the St George Foundation, through MDWA’s own fundraising campaigns and from many long-time supporters and donors.
